Half way through today’s blog tours!! Thank you if you have been sharing my posts today, much appreciated! Third tour of the day and TWG is back with another fabulous AvonBooks author, M.J.Ford. I am delighted to be reviewing ‘Keep Her Close’ for my stop today, many thanks to Avon Books for the blog tour invite and ARC.
What does TWG think?
Let me just get this out of the way first; I wasn’t totally convinced about ‘Keep Her Close’ to begin with as I struggled to find something to hold onto. That sounds bad given the nature of the storyline, but what I’m meaning is that it took me a little while to find that all important hook. You know, the vital detail in a storyline which will either make you keep reading, or give up.
Thankfully the hook DID come out of the woodwork, meaning I ended up being utterly gripped by the sticky situation which DS Josie Masters and her team found themselves in. What started off as a ‘hmmm not sure’ type of read, ended up being an ‘OMG this book is BRILLIANT’ type of read!
Expect a lot of fireworks and a lot of red herrings as ‘Keep Her Close’ is fantastic at making readers ‘work’ for their pudding, so to speak. I really did think that I knew where the storyline was heading and who was involved…but I clearly didn’t. Was I surprised? Damn right I was!!! I couldn’t believe, and still cant believe, just how much of a snake one person can be. It was as though they carried a variety of masks with them the entire time – so fake. Of course I didn’t realise at the time because, like Josie, I couldn’t see the flaws. Just goes to show that not everyone is who they say and, it doesn’t matter how close someone is to you, it doesn’t stop them from turning into an end of a bell.
I couldn’t quite understand the issue Stratton had with Josie. There seemed to be an underlying tension building between the two characters for whatever reason, I don’t know, it just felt like her boss was letting the power go to his head.
‘Keep Her Close’ has a slow pace to begin with but, after several chapters the suspense goes up several notches and the pace ended up being like a race – I loved it. There is A LOT of information to contend with at times, and I felt that the psychological element to the book required that knowledge to work as well as it did.
M.J.Ford had my heart pounding and mouth resembling the Sahara desert – ‘Keep Her Close’ is definitely a rollercoaster ride of a read which made my jaw hit the floor. A very clever, psychologically brilliant novel.
