The most dangerous place is inside your own head…
Dr Samantha Willerby, a specialist in Post Traumatic Stress, has never seen anything like this before. Following a fire on the London Underground, three survivors seek her help – but although unmistakably traumatised, their stories don’t match the facts. Are they ‘faking it’? Sam’s confusion turns to horror when one by one, instead of recovering, they are driven to suicide.
When her lover, Conrad, begins to suffer the same terrifying flashbacks, Sam is desperate to find out what’s causing them. As a mysterious and chilling conspiracy begins to unravel the nightmares begin for Sam…
What does TWG think?
A.J.Waines is a new author for me, so I was very intrigued to read ‘Inside the Whispers’ as I hadn’t really heard anything about the author until now! ‘Inside the Whispers’ is the first book in the ‘Dr Samantha Willerby’ series, and I have to say that it was quite a promising start.
I will admit that I have been sat staring at my computer screen for ages, trying to work out how the heck I was going to review this book without dropping spoilers like the Kardashians drop bf’s – it’s hard!!
Samantha’s character was very intriguing as it seemed like her personality was drip fed to the readers throughout the storyline. It wasn’t a case of being able to warm up to her straight away and hope for the best, it was as though the character had to trust the people reading about her before she let her guard down. Quite ironic though for someone who tries to get information out of other people, don’t you think?
For me personally, ‘Inside the Whispers’ was a very slow burner which kept me interested by the little teasers as opposed to the fast paced hook. I’m not saying that the book didn’t have that bite, because it did, I just found the hook a little bit difficult to get hold of until later on in the book.
That said, I thoroughly enjoyed the psychological aspect to the story – if you aren’t the type of person to become paranoid, you might find that changing whilst you read this! Even though the author had told me a piece of information at one point, it felt like I was doubting that a mere several lines later. A.J.Waines is very clever at manipulating her storyline to her advantage. by keeping the readers right where she wants them, and why not? It worked!
Overall, ‘Inside the Whispers’ was a very cleverly written and intriguing read – a promising first book in a series, I’m looking forward to reading more!
